SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT LEAD PROGRAMME

Why is this project needed? What does it involve? What are the benefits?

Who are the intended participants in this project? What is their expected commitment? What resources will they explore?

Maths Hubs and the NCETM work to develop and sustain excellent teaching for high-quality mathematical learning for all children in England. Ensuring the best outcomes for all pupils means that teachers across a whole school need to work together. The School Development Lead Programme (SDLP) is an LLME development programme for colleagues who work at a system level to effect whole school change and improvement of maths teaching and learning.

The programme explores two key models. Firstly, maths school development domains – namely maths curriculum and assessment; maths pedagogy; maths PD; maths culture – are given as a subset of the leadership domains underpinning NPQs. Secondly, a maths school development process is a direct appropriation of the EEF implementation process, with distinct consideration given to four stages: explore (why this initiative?); prepare (what will we do?); deliver (how do we effect change?); sustain (why continue?).

These ideas are introduced during the three days led by Cohort Leads; the learning during these days is designed to support participants as they undertake a school development initiative, working with a school’s senior leadership to effect change in the teaching and learning of maths. Cohort Leads also directly support in one-to-one communication and through comments on participants’ Accreditation Evidence Document (AED). Participants complete and submit this document to gain accreditation, which details their initiative and reflections on their own development, inspired by the programme’s key models and their work with school leaders. A core message for all SD Leads is the importance of working alongside school leadership, having a catalytic effect, and planning for the school's sustained development beyond the SD Lead's direct involvement with the school's leadership.

Accreditation as a School Development Lead – or working towards it – is a requirement of all colleagues working as Intensive Support Partners (ISPs) in hubs’ offer of targeted support. This NCP contributes to the primary, secondary, post-16 and LLME strategic goals.

This programme is for colleagues leading change in a school or group of schools other than their own, and will benefit both those who have previous experience of developing leadership capacity in schools/groups of schools and those who are new to the role. An ongoing commitment to lead school development of maths in a school other than your own is an essential requirement for recruitment to the programme.

This is an accredited programme. To be successful, participants must meet the accreditation criteria.

The programme consists of a blend of online and face-to-face workshops equivalent to three days. Participants will also be expected to undertake to plan, lead, and evaluate a maths school development initiative for a school other than their own during the academic year. Finally, participants will also be required to record planning, evaluation, and reflections in an Accreditation Evidence Document, which is submitted periodically and finally to an assigned Cohort Lead.
